Recursive Process Showcase LO1

At the beginning of the semester when we wrote our first essay “Grades” I always thought we only had to make local revisions. These revisions would consist of rewording a sentence, changing out words, spelling, capitalization, commas, etc. I never thought that revising my paper on a global scale was necessary. But as the semester progressed and we learned new was to revise our papers I realized how important global revisions are. When looking back at the first draft of my “Grades” essay with the peer review comments I did get a few comments about global kind of revisions. Keegan Staton-Meas commented on my main argument, “Throughout my student career I have noticed that students don’t use grades to motivate learning, they mainly care about getting the A.” He stated that I should try to reword it so that it is more of a statement and not my personal experience. When you look at my final draft, you can see that I did not change that at all. I never realized how your main argument sets up the rest of your paper and is extremely important, Now looking back I recognize that I should have taken his comment into consideration and changed it. In our more recent piece called “Big Data” we have learned various ways to self edit and even peer edit. By now we are extremely educated on how to revise our work and it is clear that in just this semester, my skills have improved. Now I really recognize global changes that need to happen in my writing. In my big data essay I had to go back and explain a quote/idea more thoroughly because although it made sense to me, when I looked back at it my readers might not have had enough explanation. The quote I used was “Patients and clinicians often have too little information to determine in specific instances which strategies to embrace and which to avoid based on a choice that is truly informed by accurate information about risk and benefits” from an article by Harlan M. Krumholz, after placing the quote I did not include a lot of explanation, all I stated was “Big data can fix this..” I never gave specifics. At the beginning of the semester I would have just left that and thought it was good enough, now I have gained knowledge and understanding on how to improve my writing in both the global and local scales.
