Integration of Sources LO2
For our final project in English 110 we did a project on Big Data. For this project we looked at a few sources in class and had to find two other sources using the UNE database and another source of our choosing. For my essay on big data I used the source from class “Everybody Lies” by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, “The Application of Big Data in Medicine: Current Implications and Future Directions” by Christopher Austin, “Big Data and New Knowledge in Medicine: The Thinking , Training , and Tools Needed for A Learning Health System” by Harlan M. Krumholz, and “Summary of the HIPAA Privacy Rule” by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Before writing our essays we did a prewriting activity where we looked at main claims in the separate articles and how they would all connect. In my paper I used the sources to support my main claims, In previous essays we used the evidence to make our claims. One example of of integrating my sources was when I was stating that big Data internet trends are a positive to the healthcare field. I integrated two sources to support my claim and make it strong. I used a combination of my source by Christopher Austin where he states, “In 2008, Google Labs famously created the Google Flu Trends web service to predict influenza activity based off of searches such as “flu”, “fever” and cough” and Seth Stephens-Davidowitz where he says “anytime I suspect people may be suffering…I turn to Google data. One of the potential benefits of this new data, and knowing how to interpret it, is the possibility of helping vulnerable people who might otherwise go overlooked.” Using both of these pieces of evidence to support my main claim really helped to support my claim. At the beginning of the semester I would normally throw in a quote and not really set it up with framing techniques and they would lack explanation. Now in my big data essay it is clear that I have developed skills to be able to select, integrate, and explain my quotes effectively.
