Reaction to “Reaching the Internet Generation”
While listening to this webinar most of the things Jean M. Twenge had to say I thought sounded about right. Although this was a webinar for teachers and professors to better teach us, it sounded a bit like she was saying that because we grew up with technology surrounding us we aren’t as advanced as the generations before us. That we need shorter textbooks because we can’t handle it. Or that the textbooks need to be written in a more casual fashion.
But growing up it was the teachers who introduced iPads and laptops to us at a young age. Many of us are perfectly fine without using technology to learn. I think that the information related to the “Internet Generation” is general. Not every person from this generation fits into how they have categorized it. I know personally I would much rather take notes on paper, or read from the actual textbook and not off of my computer.

Hi, Christine,
I was also bothered by the implication that textbooks should be less demanding. In her response to one of the follow-up questions, she indicated that the material should be the same but written in a less formal way. I’m not sure if I agree. I think incorporating different types of sources could serve the purpose of making the material more palatable, but that would mean also including academic sources that written to an academic audience, not necessarily a student population.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
